Dynamic Interactions: Uniting Non-Equilibrium and Condensed Matter Physics

August 29-30, 2024

Bethe Center for Theoretical Physics, Wegelerstraße 10, 53115 Bonn (Germany)

Non-equilibrium physics, focusing on systems away from thermal equilibrium, provides novel insights into dynamic processes, phase transitions, and emergent phenomena essential for understanding complex materials. Condensed matter physics, traditionally concerned with the properties of solids and liquids in equilibrium, offers a robust framework for investigating the structural and electronic characteristics of these systems. Marrying the two promises new control over materials properties, and stabilization of entirely new ground states.

This workshop will bring together leading experts from both fields from the Universities of Bonn and St Andrews, facilitating the exchange of knowledge, stimulating discussions on recent advancements and identifying future directions. Key topics will include quantum many-body systems, driven and open quantum systems, non-equilibrium phase transitions, advanced methods for materials modelling and characterization.

The workshop will foster collaborations between the two universities and catalyze ideas how to pair the fields of material science and non-equilibrium dynamics to seed new research directions.

There is no public registration for this workshop. Please contact the organisers in case you would like to participate.

Organizers:

  • Hans Kroha (University of Bonn)
  • Peter Wahl (University of St. Andrews, UK)
