Abstract:
Beamline for Schools (BL4S) has been an outreach initiative of CERN since 2014. This program invites teams of high school students from around the world to propose particle physics experiments that can be conducted under specific conditions at a particle beamline. Students are provided with detailed information about the beam's characteristics—such as energy, intensity, and particle composition—as well as the detectors and TDAQ system that CERN can make available. Within these parameters, they have the freedom to propose any type of experiment. The students are encouraged to get in touch with experts and a list of volunteer physicists is provided to them.
In 2019, DESY joined the competition, offering both beamtime and manpower while CERN's accelerators were undergoing maintenance.
In this talk, we will present the structure of BL4S and discuss several examples of past winning experiments. Additionally, we will provide a brief overview of CERN's and DESY's outreach, education, and career development offerings.
