Abstract: 

The Standard Model is remarkably successful yet incomplete, failing to explain phenomena like e.g. dark matter and matter-antimatter asymmetry. While direct searches look for new particles, indirect searches probe Beyond the Standard Model physics via precision measurements of known quantities. Due to its large mass, the tau-lepton is uniquely sensitive to new physics, but its incredibly short lifetime makes experimental measurements highly challenging.

This talk presents the first measurement of differential $\gamma\gamma \to \tau\tau$ cross-sections in Pb+Pb collisions using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. This measurement enables the extraction of the tau-lepton anomalous magnetic moment ($a_{\tau}$) and electric dipole moment ($d_{\tau}$), which provide a powerful probe for testing the Standard Model and searching for physics beyond it.
