Abstract: 

The ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC allows us a glimpse into the early universe only a few microseconds after the big bang. To perform measurements with ever greater precision, the tracking systems are upgraded to low-power, thin sensors with a very fine granularity. ALICE is the first experiment at the LHC to use monolithic active pixel sensors, where the electronics are integrated into the sensing element. It has an unprecedentedly low material budget in its inner tracking system of only 0.36% X/X0 per layer, and a spatial resolution of 5 μm. 

For the upgrade during the current long shutdown at the LHC, the inner three layers of the inner tracking system will be replaced with wafer-scale monolithic sensors, bent into truly cylindrical layers and held in place by carbon foam. These low power sensors will be air cooled, reducing the material budget to only 0.09% X/X0 per layer and leading to a factor two improvement in pointing resolutions from very low transverse momentum (O(100 MeV/c). Extensive R&D has shown that bent sensors perform equally well as flat sensors, and the performance of 26-cm long sensors produced using stitching has been demonstrated after irradiation and at room temperature. The final sensor prototype is currently under investigation.

This seminar introduces the ALICE detector and its tracking system upgrades, showing the achievements and plans in R&D for one of the most precise tracking systems to date. It will also touch on a completely new detector, ALICE 3, that has been proposed for LHC Runs 5 and 6, which will enable tracking of very low-pT particles with a potential for many novel measurements including physics beyond the Standard Model.
