Abstract:
This seminar explores the pivotal role of permanent magnets in the design and operation of particle accelerators. Permanent magnets, known for their ability to maintain a constant magnetic field without the need for external power, offer significant advantages in terms of energy efficiency and operational stability. Case studies are presented, ranging from smaller fixed-field devices to larger adjustable devices that can act as replacements for electromagnets, as well as undulators and wigglers for light source facilities. Highlights of recent advances in the field are presented, as well as advantages and disadvantages of permanent magnet versus other available technologies.
