Calabi-Yau varieties and L-functions

L-functions are objects connecting different areas of mathematics and a good tool to experimentally examine various conjectures.  We describe how the Picard-Fuchs equation of a family of Calabi-Yau varieties is related to point counting over finite fields which leads to a method of systematically computing the L-function at every fiber of the family.
