“The traineeship will be carried out within the research activities of our group, focusing work on the hadronic calorimeter of the Lohengrin Experiment.
The hadronic calorimeter (HCal) is a detector that is crucial for the identification of rare background events at the experiment. According to a preliminary design, it consists of stacked layers of steel and scintillator material read out by photomultipliers(PMTs). At first a small scale prototype that can be used for preparatory data taking will be build and instrumented from existing, but partially old and/or untested components. The first step would be to characterize the scintillator material and to instrument the PMTs. Work on electronics as well as programming of microcontrollers here is as important as the mechanical setup of the HCal prototype. Secondly a simulation of the HCal can be set up to determine the best layout of the prototype calorimeter. For this we are currently working on a simulation framework based on GEANT4 which can be used to set up different HCal geometries and compare them.” -
