News from the IT department, how (not?) to move a server room and IT security
by ,
Abstract:
Following up on our series "News from the IT department", we will start with the usual news flash, present some impressions concerning the move of the IT infrastructure to the ROT building and then focus on a few IT security related topics and best practices.
During the move, almost 400 network ports for the new
offices and labs had to be prepared, complemented by an even larger number of network ports (all with cables) in our server room. While parts of the move are still ongoing and the next moves are already being prepared, we will show some impressions, discuss some infrastructure changes, and conclude with some good and less good take-aways.
In the IT security part, we will go through some of the most common cases of fraud attempts, phishing and similar cases which is a regular source of IT questions and doubts and remains a topic evolving heavily.
Without going into details about actual security incidents and "almost-incidents", we will go through our common observations and give some advice on how to be less of a target for those who'd like to steal your research or personal data or digital identity.
