Solving string theory with integrability

Description

String theory is the only self-consistent theory of quantum gravity which we know, and a cornerstone of our understanding of the holographic principle. Despite decades of investigation, most of our ability to compute observables was limited to special string backgrounds (like flat space), or to protected ("BPS") quantities. More recently, a framework to solve string theory on a wealth of backgrounds was developed, based on the theory of integrable models.

In this blackboard lecture I will present this approach, and outline its implications for AdS5xS5 superstrings (and the dual N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory) and AdS3 string backgrounds (and their largely mysterious dual theories).
