Description
Abstract:
The High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will open new opportunities for precision flavour physics while pushing the LHCb detectors to operate in a much more demanding environment. As part of the LHCb Upgrade II programme, the Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors are being redesigned to maintain their excellent particle identification performance at instantaneous luminosities of up to 1 × 10³⁴ cm⁻² s⁻¹, where significantly higher occupancies and track multiplicities are expected.
This contribution presents the ongoing R&D for the RICH Upgrade II photon detection system. Two baseline photon detector technologies, silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) and microchannel plate photomultipliers (MCP-PMTs), are being developed together with fast front-end electronics capable of precise time measurements. In parallel, work is underway on detector integration, cooling concepts for the SiPM-based solution, and strategies to mitigate radiation damage. The latest results from laboratory measurements and prototype tests will also be presented, highlighting the progress towards the next generation of the LHCb RICH detectors.
